The U.S. Coast Guard has ended the search for six people who were aboard a medical aircraft that crashed in waters near Nantucket, Massachusetts.
The Gulfstream G100 was traveling from Bermuda to Boston when it disappeared from radar around 2:00 a.m. Saturday. Four of the people aboard were Canadian nationals and two were from Bermuda.
After the aircraft lost contact, the Coast Guard launched an emergency search involving helicopters, aircraft and marine vessels. Crews later located the wreckage off the coast of Nantucket.
The search was suspended after 66 hours of continuous operations in the area where the aircraft went down. Rear Adm. Matthew Lake, commander of the Coast Guard’s Northeast District, said the families of those aboard had been notified.
“Suspending a search is not an easy decision,” Lake said.
U.S. authorities said an investigation will now be conducted in coordination with the relevant agencies to determine what caused the aircraft to crash.
