U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that American officials are closely monitoring reports of a suspected plague breach at a Russian research laboratory.

The concern follows reports that a Russian laboratory technician became infected and died, prompting localized quarantine measures in the region. U.S. health and security agencies are monitoring the potential risk of a containment failure.

“I don’t think it’s a cause for alarm, but it is a reason for attention and a reason to simply keep an eye on it. And that’s what we’re doing,” Rubio said.
