In the past, this Commission has determined in various reports the existence of evidence and has documented cases indicating that the Venezuelan State, through the top of the governmental apparatus and security forces, has committed crimes against humanity. The report presented today in Geneva to the Human Rights Council provides “new evidence of the harsh post-election repression that followed the presidential elections of July 28, 2024” and states that political persecution “has continued in 2025 against those who defend human rights and freedoms”. Among the elements she provided, the president of the Commission, the Portuguese jurist Marta Valiñas, said that of the 25 deaths related to that repressive episode, 14 could be sufficiently examined and documented, and that the security forces were involved in twelve of these. “In the protests in the city of Maracay, Aragua state, members of the Bolivarian National Guard and the 99th Army Brigade fired live ammunition at the protesters. Six people died during those events. One of them was shot with a shotgun at less than 10 meters away,” Valiñas stated. The head of the Commission also recalled that a year after those incidents, the Prosecutor’s Office “has not reported on the investigations it claims to have carried out”, although from the beginning this entity assured that the security forces had no responsibility for the deaths and, on the contrary, accused the opposition. “However, our investigation has revealed the opposite and, to date, all deaths remain unpunished,” he denounced.UN Commission for Venezuela confirms that there was a resurgence of repression after elections
Geneva.- The UN Fact-Finding Commission for Venezuela said on Monday that the investigations it has carried out over the last year, a period in which there was a resurgence of repression related to the outcome of the last presidential elections, confirm that “the crime of persecution for political reasons” continues to occur.
He highlighted that “there is no national authority that has proven capable of preventing, prosecuting, and punishing the serious human rights violations that constitute international crimes,” therefore “the only hope of justice for the victims” ultimately rests with the international community.
