A South Carolina inmate escaped from a county detention center after allegedly using a pencil to manipulate the locking mechanism of his jail cell, according to officials.
Charles Alexander Dieterich escaped from the Chesterfield County Detention Center on September 1. Authorities said he made his way through the facility’s kitchen and exited through an unlocked door.
Dieterich then scaled a fence topped with barbed wire and fled the facility.
Deputies tracked him down on a nearby road approximately 30 minutes after his escape. He was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for cuts he sustained while getting over the fence.
Dieterich was later returned to the Chesterfield County Detention Center.
