Cardinals extend manager Oliver Marmol’s contract for two years

San Luis. — The St. Louis Cardinals announced this Sunday a two-season contract extension for their manager Oliver Mármol, an agreement that also includes a club option for the 2029 season.

Mármol, 39 years old and of Dominican descent, was entering the last year of the contract he had signed in March 2024. Since taking over the team in 2022, he has accumulated a record of 325 wins and 232 losses, ranking 11th among managers with the most victories in the history of the franchise. Currently, Mármol is among the managers with the longest continuous tenure in their position within the National League, only behind Dave Roberts with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Torey Lovullo with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The club’s president of baseball operations, Chaim Bloom, highlighted the manager’s commitment to the organization and his focus on the development of young talent. “During the time I’ve known Oli, I’ve seen someone who understands what makes this organization special. He is committed to competing at the highest level and to promoting the growth of our young core,” Bloom noted. In his first season at the helm of the team, in 2022, Marmol led the Cardinals to the National League Central Division title with 93 victories, achieving the club’s first divisional championship since 2019. At just 36 years old at the time, he became the youngest manager to lead his team to the postseason since Lou Boudreau guided Cleveland to the World Series title in 1948. Mármol’s relationship with the organization dates back to 2007, when he started as a player in the minor league system. He later worked as a coach and manager in the minors between 2012 and 2016, until he joined the coaching staff of the major league team in 2017. Finally, on October 25, 2021, he was named the 51st manager in the history of the franchise. The Cardinals enter the 2026 season in a transitional phase after finishing last season with a 78-84 record. During the offseason, the club made several important moves, including the trades of Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray, and Brendan Donovan, with the aim of strengthening their prospect system and building a new competitive core for the future. ⚾
