Conner Greene leads Escogido’s sixth win in the Round Robin

SANTIAGO DE LOS CABALLEROS.– With a solid pitching performance by Conner Greene and a timely attack, the Leones del Escogido defeated the Águilas Cibaeñas 5-2 this Sunday at the Cibao Stadium, to add their sixth victory in the Round Robin of the championship.

Greene (1-0) was key in the scarlet conquest by pitching five innings in which he allowed just one hit and gave one walk, in addition to striking out two batters. The only run he tolerated came in the second inning, when he conceded two walks and allowed a single that loaded the bases, before self-relieving and dominating the rest of his work. With the triumph, the capitalinos improved their record to 6-1 and remain firm in the first position of the Round Robin, while the Águilas, with a 3-4 record, continue in third place.

El Escogido took an early lead by manufacturing two runs in the second inning against Abdiel Mendoza. Junior Lake opened with a single to center, followed by another hit by José Marmolejos to right field. A double by Jorge Mateo drove in Lake, while Marmolejos was put out trying to score after a wild throw by shortstop Ezequiel Durán. Mateo advanced to third and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Elier Hernández.

The red offense struck again in the fifth chapter against Luis Felipe Castillo. Socrates Brito connected a double between left and center fields that brought Erik Gonzalez to the plate. Brito advanced to third after an illegal move by the pitcher and scored thanks to a ground ball by Lake to the shortstop, putting the scoreboard at 4-1. The referee’s decision generated the reaction of some fans, who threw objects onto the field, causing a brief interruption of the match. After the restart, Jean Henríquez made a pitch close to Erik González, which led to an altercation with catcher Elih Marrero and the emptying of the benches. González was ejected from the match. Mendoza (0-1) took the loss by allowing the first two runs of the Escogido, while Stephen Nogosek earned the save (1) by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

On the offensive for the Lions, Jorge Mateo hit 2-for-3, with two doubles, one RBI, one run scored, a walk and a stolen base; Socrates Brito went 1-for-4, with a double, one RBI, one run scored and a walk; Junior Lake finished 1-for-5, with one RBI and one run scored, and Erik Gonzalez went 2-for-4, with one run scored.

For the Eagles, Cristhian Adames hit 2-3, with one RBI, one run scored and a walk, while Aderlin Rodriguez went 1-3, with a walk. This Monday, the Leones del Escogido will receive the Toros del Este at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium, starting at 4:00 in the afternoon.
