Stars show resilience and leave the Giants on the field at Tetelo Vargas

SAN PEDRO DE MACORÍS.– The Estrellas Orientales once again showed character in a high-tension game by defeating the Gigantes del Cibao 4-3 in 12 innings, leaving them on the field on Friday night at the Tetelo Vargas Stadium, in the continuation of the regular season of the LIDOM championship.

The outcome came in the bottom of the twelfth episode when Leones extend their streak and secure themselves in third place. Almonte, acting as a pinch hitter, received a walk with the bases loaded against reliever Routzahn, allowing the greens to seal a key victory in their fight for classification. With the triumph, the Estrellas improved their record to 22-25, remaining tied in third place with the Leones del Escogido, while the Gigantes fell to 20-26, tied with the Tigres del Licey, who also achieved a victory in the day. The victory went to reliever Oddy Núñez (1-1), who worked one inning in which he allowed a hit and an unearned run, gave a walk and struck out two batters. The loss went to Yaqui Rivera (0-1), who could not preserve the lead in just one-third of an inning, giving up two runs, one of them earned.

Starting Pitching Duel

The starting pitchers Oscar de la Cruz, for the Estrellas, and Daniel Mengden, for the Gigantes, starred in a close duel from the mound. De la Cruz pitched five innings, allowed four hits, gave no walks and struck out six. Mengden, for his part, also worked five innings, accepted four hits, gave one base and struck out five.

Offensive Highlights

For the Giants, Luis García Jr. went 2-for-5 with a run scored; Nomar Mazara, 2-for-4; and Melvin Mercedes, 1-for-2 with a home run, a run scored, and two RBIs. By the Stars, Rodolfo Castro went 3-2 with a run and an RBI; Vidal Bruján, 3-1 with an RBI; and Raimel Tapia, 5-1 with a run scored.

On Saturday’s billboard, the Leones del Escogido will visit the Gigantes del Cibao at the Julián Javier Stadium starting at 5:00 p.m.; the Toros del Este will face the Tigres del Licey at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium at the same time; and the Águilas Cibaeñas will travel to San Pedro de Macorís to face the Estrellas Orientales from 7:30 p.m.
