The causes behind the tragedies

While a significant portion of the deaths of Dominican baseball players is linked to traffic accidents, another more recent phenomenon has set off alarms: the application of prohibited substances to young prospects.

The case of Ismael Ureña Pérez is a heartbreaking example. According to the investigation by the Santo Domingo Este Prosecutor’s Office, the teenager was a victim of the injection of veterinary use steroids (caballín), a practice intended to enhance his physical performance in front of talent scouts. His body did not withstand the effects and he died after several days in the hospital. Now, with the death of Talmaré, the debate on the protection and health of young people pursuing the dream of signing a professional contract is reopened.
