Lionel Messi renews contract with Inter Miami until 2028
MIAMI, USA – The Argentinian star Lionel Messi extended his contract with Inter Miami CF until the year 2028, as officially confirmed by the Major League Soccer (MLS) club.
The renewal, announced with the message “He’s home”, was accompanied by a promotional video showing Messi, elegantly dressed in a dark blue suit, signing the new contract at Freedom Park, the stadium that the team is building in the Miami airport area and whose inauguration is scheduled for 2026.
Messi, 38 years old, arrived at Inter Miami in 2023 and quickly became the main reference of the club and the league. In that first season he led the team to win the Leagues Cup 2023, the first title in the history of the franchise. In addition, he was awarded Most Valuable Player (MVP) and contributed to his team obtaining the Supporters’ Shield as the best team in the regular season.
During the 2025 season, the Argentinian captain maintained a superlative level, closing the campaign as the top scorer of the MLS with 29 goals and 19 assists, propelling Inter Miami to the playoffs as the third-ranked team in the Eastern Conference.
Currently, the team led by Gerardo “Tata” Martino plays its home matches at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, about 50 kilometers from downtown Miami, but the club hopes that Messi will lead the team in its new home, the modern Freedom Park, in two years.
According to official figures from May of this year, Messi receives a salary of 20.4 million dollars annually, being the highest-paid player in the MLS. In addition, he continues to lead the jersey sales, filling stadiums at each presentation and exponentially increasing the media presence of the American league globally.
With this renewal, Messi secures his continuity until the age of 41, solidifying his legacy in North American soccer and reaffirming his commitment to the Inter Miami project.
The South Florida team will begin this Friday the first-round playoff series against Nashville SC, with the intact dream of conquering the first MLS championship in its history.
