Spain forward Borja Iglesias said he would shake President Donald Trump’s hand if Spain defeats Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, despite his well-known political differences with the U.S. leader.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium, Iglesias acknowledged that greeting the U.S. president would be part of the post-match protocol if Spain lifts the trophy.
“I don’t want to go to jail. I hope it happens when everyone is happy, it happens quickly and I can forget about it,” the striker said with a laugh.
He added that he has no intention of creating controversy before the match.
“I don’t think this is the time to create controversy. People know perfectly well what I think,” Iglesias said.

The comments come as Trump is expected to attend the World Cup final, where FIFA’s traditional trophy presentation protocol could see the U.S. president greet players from the winning team.
