WASHINGTON (EFE).– There is a before and after Tiger Woods in the history of golf. Away from the fields throughout 2025 after rupturing his Achilles tendon in March and undergoing his seventh back surgery in September, Woods has been out of the competitive elite for years. However, he remains the most recognized golfer of his generation and an iconic figure in world sport. From this age, the Californian could compete in the PGA Tour Champions, the circuit reserved for veteran players.
«I will probably play about 25 tournaments between both circuits and that should cover most of the year, right?», he joked weeks ago during the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, a tournament he hosts. The last professional appearance of Woods dates back to July 2024, when he did not make the cut at the British Open.

An Unrepeatable Record

Woods’ career is backed by historical figures: 15 ‘major’ titles, 82 PGA Tour victories, 683 weeks as world number one and a streak of 142 consecutive tournaments making the cut. A dominance built on an aggressive and dominant style that redefined the way modern golf is played. Among his most remembered triumphs is the 1999 PGA Championship, where he defeated Sergio García in a duel that was recorded as one of the great moments of contemporary golf. His impact transcended sports. Woods turned golf into a global spectacle, boosting audiences, millionaire prizes, and unprecedented advertising contracts. With Nike — a relationship that ended in 2024 — he became the image of golf for more than two decades and amassed a fortune exceeding $1 billion, an achievement reserved for very few athletes.

Injuries and scandals

The year 2009 marked a breaking point. A car accident on Thanksgiving led to a scandal of infidelities that caused his divorce, the loss of sponsors, and a prolonged competitive pause. Since then, he has only added one more ‘major’: the 2019 Masters Tournament. In 2017 he was arrested for driving under the influence of substances, and in 2021 he suffered a serious traffic accident in Los Angeles that caused multiple fractures in his right leg, drastically limiting his presence on the circuit. In his personal life, he has recently been linked to the Trump family through his relationship with Vanessa Trump, mother of Kai Trump, granddaughter of the former US president and a young golfer.

The PGA’s Rescue Challenge

Beyond his uncertain competitive future, Woods has taken on a new key role in professional golf. At 50 years old, he was appointed chairman of the PGA Tour Future Competition Committee, created to modernize the circuit and face the challenge of LIV Golf, funded by Saudi capital. With changes planned for 2027, Woods leads an effort aimed at revitalizing the PGA after the departure of major figures such as Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, or Dustin Johnson. His authority and legacy make him a central figure in defending the traditional model of professional golf. Half a century into his life, Tiger Woods continues to influence the sport he transformed forever, even away from the green.
