Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni became emotional after his team’s 1-0 loss to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, admitting he needs time to decide whether he will remain in charge of the national team.

During his post-match press conference at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Scaloni struggled to contain his emotions while reflecting on the defeat and his future. The coach said he plans to speak with Argentine Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia before making a decision.

“As for me, I have to speak with the president. I need time to decide what I want to do. I also feel the need to think because I don’t know if I’ll be able to achieve something as great as this again. We’ll have to talk. I’m grateful to the president,” Scaloni said.

Scaloni’s current contract with Argentina is set to expire in December. Although he did not announce his departure, his comments left uncertainty over whether he will continue leading the reigning Copa América champions after the World Cup.
