Logroño.- A team of researchers from the Biomedical Research Center of La Rioja (CIBIR) is working on the development of a new gene therapy to identify a protein present in Alzheimer’s patients, in order to design a treatment to prevent this neurodegenerative disease.
The Minister of Health and Social Policies of the Government of La Rioja, María Martín, accompanied by the principal investigator of Molecular Neurobiology at CIBIR, Lidia Álvarez-Erviti, presented this project this Monday at an informative meeting, which is considered a pioneer worldwide.
Award-winning study
The study, titled ‘APOE-Switch: transformation of the APOE4 allele to APOE3 as a disease-modifying therapy for Alzheimer’s disease’, has been awarded second prize in the fourth edition of the ‘Fundación hna Scientific Health Research Award’, they detailed.
The research developed at CIBIR addresses one of the main risk factors associated with non-hereditary Alzheimer’s: the APOE4 allele.
The objective of the project is to achieve its modification through gene editing, incorporating the use of extracellular vesicles as a targeted delivery system to the brain.
