Every July 9th, the International Day for the Destruction of Small Arms and Light Weapons is commemorated worldwide, a date established following the General Conference on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons held in 2001 at the United Nations headquarters. This observance seeks to draw attention to one of the most persistent and deadly scourges of the modern world: the uncontrolled proliferation of firearms.
Since this date was established, millions of weapons have been removed from circulation and destroyed around the world. Voluntary surrender initiatives have been key for citizens to part with pistols, revolvers, rifles, and other weapons, with the hope of contributing to a safer coexistence. However, the current reality is far from encouraging.
More weapons than ever
Paradoxically, although approximately 800,000 firearms are destroyed each year to this date, for every one that is eliminated, it is estimated that ten new ones are manufactured. It is a perverse cycle where the efforts of citizens and civil organizations seem to be overwhelmed by the industrial machinery of arms production, often protected or promoted by the governments themselves.
Organizations such as Oxfam International, Amnesty International, and the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) have firmly denounced this contradiction. While they value the symbolic and practical gesture of destroying weapons, they insist that true change must come from state structures and government policies.
“As long as the arms industry remains standing and governments do not regulate the manufacture and trade of weapons, violence will not stop”, spokespersons for these institutions have warned.
Citizen initiatives and peace education
In addition to the weapon collection points that are set up in different cities around the world every July 9th, NGOs also promote educational talks, conferences, community activities, and symposiums, with the aim of raising public awareness about the devastating effects of the indiscriminate use of weapons.
These actions seek to promote a culture of peace, and above all, to show that security is not built through threats or weaponry, but through trust, social inclusion, and the strengthening of the community fabric.
However, these same organizations acknowledge that their work will not be enough if States do not seriously take on the task of curbing arms trafficking and revising permissive legislation. In many cases, it is easier to buy a weapon than to access basic health or education services.
