Every May 23rd, World Turtle Day is celebrated, a date dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of protecting this ancient species, which faces multiple threats that have led it to be at risk of extinction.

A Global Call for Turtle Survival
World Turtle Day was established in the year 2000 by the American organization American Tortoise Rescue, founded in 1990 with the aim of protecting all species of land and sea turtles. Since then, this day has become an opportunity to educate the public, promote protection actions and encourage respect for these millenary reptiles.
Turtles, which have inhabited the Earth for more than
200 million years, have survived the extinction of the dinosaurs, but today their survival depends on human behavior. Habitat loss, illegal trade, the consumption of their meat and eggs, and marine pollution are just some of the causes that seriously threaten their existence.
A fascinating and vulnerable reptile
Turtles, scientifically known as
chelonians, belong to the reptile order and are characterized by their emblematic shell, which is directly connected to their spine. Currently, around
357 species are recognized, many of them endangered due to
factors such as climate change, pollution, and poaching.
Actions and activities on World Turtle Day
During this day, in different parts of the world,
talks, educational campaigns, beach cleanups, release of hatchlings into their natural habitat, and fundraising activities are organized for research and conservation of turtles. The goal is to raise awareness among all generations, especially the youngest, about the need to protect and respect these animals.
World Turtle Day is more than a commemoration; it is a call to
responsible and collective action so that turtles continue to be part of the planet’s biodiversity. Preserving them is also conserving the balance of the marine and terrestrial ecosystems we share.
