A South Korean court on Wednesday ordered Kwon Hyuk-bin, founder of video game company Smilegate, to pay his wife 2.55 trillion won ($1.91 billion) in what could be a record marital property division in the country, Yonhap reported.
The Seoul Family Court ruled that Kwon must transfer 35% of his shares in Smilegate and pay 65 billion won in cash as part of the division of marital assets. Kwon currently owns 100% of the company.
The court concluded that the marriage had irretrievably broken down due to prolonged conflicts and other circumstances, granting the divorce while determining that both parties were equally responsible for the breakdown. However, it rejected the wife’s claim for alimony. The woman, identified only by her surname Lee, filed for divorce in November 2022.
