Tesla unveiled a new generation of its electric Roadster on Thursday, October 15, featuring propulsion technology developed with SpaceX that allows the car to fly short distances. During a demonstration at SpaceX’s rocket testing facility in McGregor, Texas, the vehicle used high-pressure compressed-air thrusters to hover over parked Tesla cars and perform an aerial flip. CEO Elon Musk said production is expected to begin in 2028.

Tesla announced three versions: Performance, Thrust and Rocket. The company claims the Rocket version can accelerate from zero to nearly 60 mph in less than 0.59 seconds, while the vehicle could exceed 230 mph and offer more than 300 miles of range. Reservations for the thruster-equipped version require a $250,000 payment in the United States. Tesla cautioned that the flying capability cannot be used on public roads, and questions remain about safety, regulatory approval and production plans. The project was first presented in 2017 and has faced repeated delays.
