4.7 magnitude earthquake in Naples, Italy, leaves numerous damages and at least 8 injured

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake in the province of Naples (Italy), the strongest recorded in this region in the last 40 years, left at least 8 people with minor injuries, numerous damages, and interruptions to energy and mobility services.

According to the Italian Civil Protection agency, the tremor occurred six kilometers from Naples, in the Phlegraean Fields area at 7:46 PM in the town of Pozzuoli and was clearly felt in the city of Naples as well as in municipalities in the province, where people ran out into the streets in terror.

According to Italian media, the tremor has caused the collapse of a building’s facade in Pozzuoli and several collapses of cornices and plaster between that town and Bagnoli, which have not affected the residents.

Power outages and mobility

Apart from landslides and damage to some infrastructure, power outages were also reported from Pizzofalcone to Fuorigrotta, and firefighters are receiving dozens of calls for elevators stuck in buildings or collapses.

The Municipality of Pozzuoli has activated the Municipal Operations Center (COC) to coordinate all surveillance and assistance activities for the population.

Rail traffic on the Cumana and Circumflegrea lines has been temporarily suspended to carry out necessary checks, announced EAV, the public transport company of the Campania region.

Seismic region

This is a zone of high seismic activity: the Gulf of Naples is located between the great Vesuvius volcano and the Phlegraean Fields, a caldera with numerous craters, many underwater, named as such (burning land) by the ancient Greeks.

The Phlegraean Fields and their cities, where half a million people live, are going through a phase of ‘bradyseism’, a phenomenon that raises the ground level depending on the gas and magma accumulated in the depths.

The most significant tremors, before tonight’s event, date back to March 12 and June 30, 2025, when a 4.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded.

The Government explained in a note that the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, is in constant contact with the Minister of Civil Protection, Nello Musumeci, and the Government delegate of Naples, Michele di Bari, to monitor the situation, and the Crisis Unit has been convened to coordinate the oversight and response following the earthquake.
