A 5.7 magnitude earthquake shakes El Salvador, leaving no victims or damage

San Salvador– A 5.7 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Pacific waters shook El Salvador this Wednesday, with authorities reporting no casualties or material damage at the moment.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), the tremor was recorded at 18:30 local time (01:30 GMT on Thursday) off the coast of Usulután, 55 kilometers south of Playa El Espino, with a depth of 51 kilometers.

“There is no tsunami threat for El Salvador”, indicated the MARN on X, while detailing that the tremor was felt throughout practically the entire territory.

For its part, Civil Protection maintained that its Emergency Operations Center “is active to coordinate any incident throughout the territory“.

Most of the earthquakes that occur in El Salvador usually originate in the waters of the Pacific Ocean and at a much greater depth.

The last time this Central American country suffered serious damage and human losses from an earthquake was in 2001, when two earthquakes of 7.7 and 6.6 occurred, leaving around 1,200 dead and more than 8,000 injured.
