Accident in Punta Cana leaves one dead and two people injured

Punta Cana.- A 26-year-old man lost his life and two other people were injured following an accident that occurred early this Saturday on Barceló Avenue, in Punta Cana.

The deceased was identified as Wilmer Dionel Martínez Sosa, who was driving a garbage compactor truck that collided with a private bus. After the collision, the truck ended up overturned and the driver was trapped under the structure.

The Verón-Punta Cana Fire Department reported that it received the alert about the accident at 11:58 p.m. on Friday and that a first unit arrived at the scene around 12:08 a.m.

Due to the condition in which the truck was left, other units were subsequently sent to support the rescue efforts. Firefighters used a crane and specialized equipment to free the driver, but he had passed away.

The other vehicle involved was a red Kia brand bus, with an approximate capacity of 80 passengers. Two people traveling on the bus were also injured.

The bus driver was not at the scene when emergency services arrived. According to the information gathered, he also suffered injuries and was previously taken to a health center.

Units from the Verón-Punta Cana Fire Department, agents from the National Police, members of the General Directorate of Traffic and Land Transportation Safety (Digesett), and medical personnel arrived at the scene to provide assistance.

Rescue and emergency response efforts concluded around 1:23 a.m. Authorities are investigating the circumstances under which the collision occurred.
