The Terminator saga faces a historic change: Arnold Schwarzenegger, the emblematic face of the franchise for 35 years, will not participate in the next film. This was confirmed by James Cameron, creator and director of the saga, who is preparing a new installment that will mark the first chapter without the presence of the Austrian actor.
The news, reported by Sensacine, points to the end of an era for one of the most influential science fiction series in cinema, while Cameron outlines the future of the story with a renewed vision.
Cameron, currently immersed in the promotion of Avatar: Fire and Ashes, a film that recently premiered in Argentine cinemas, detailed to The Hollywood Reporter —according to Sensacine— that his attention will focus on Terminator once the Avatar cycle concludes.

The director explained that he insisted on the actor’s participation in Terminator: Dark Fate, considering that installment as a fitting closure for his portrayal of the T-800. Now, Cameron is betting on expanding the Terminator concept and exploring new ideas about temporal war and superintelligence, with the aim of moving away from the classic protagonists and opening space for new proposals.
The Terminator saga debuted in 1984 and, since then, has added six films: Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Terminator Salvation (2009), Terminator: Genisys (2015) and Terminator: Dark Fate (2019).
In addition, the franchise expanded to television with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008) and the animated series Terminator Zero (2024).
Throughout its history, the saga’s narrative has experienced jumps and reboots, with some installments ignoring the events of previous films, which has contributed to a fragmented structure and the constant reinvention of its universe. Schwarzenegger’s departure did not surprise the most attentive followers. In May 2023, the actor himself announced that he would not return to the franchise, arguing that the latest installments “were not well written,” according to Sensacine.
That same month, Cameron announced that he was working on a reboot of the saga. Subsequently, in February 2024, Linda Hamilton, who played Sarah Connor, also confirmed her definitive departure from Terminator. Although on previous occasions the actors have left the door open to a possible return, Cameron’s confirmation of Schwarzenegger’s absence gives a definitive character to the interpreter’s farewell.
What was the plot that revolutionized science fiction?
In a future where machines have subjugated humanity and Skynet, the artificial intelligence that controls them, is about to be defeated by the resistance led by John Connor, the machines devise a plan to prevent their defeat.
They consider that assassinating John in the present would be useless, so they decide to eliminate his mother, Sarah Connor, before he is born. Skynet sends a Terminator T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a cyborg with a human appearance, to the past, specifically to 1984, with the aim of killing Sarah.
The resistance, led by John Connor, also manages to send a human, Kyle Reese, to protect Sarah. Once in 1984, the Terminator begins his search by assassinating two women named Sarah Connor, found through a phone book. Sarah, the real mother of John, seeks refuge in a nightclub, where she is attacked but rescued by Reese. Both flee, while the Terminator continues to pursue them. During the escape, Reese explains to Sarah the origin of Skynet, the nuclear war, and the rise of the machines. Skynet, upon gaining consciousness, initiates the conflict between the United States and Russia through a nuclear attack, resulting in the destruction of humanity and the dominance of the machines. John Connor, in the future, will be the leader of the resistance that will reverse that situation.
After a series of confrontations and chases, Sarah and Reese hide in a motel where they begin an intimate relationship. Later, the Terminator locates them and, after a final confrontation in a factory, Reese dies and Sarah manages to destroy the Terminator using a hydraulic press.
Finally, Sarah, pregnant with John Connor, takes refuge in Mexico. There she records messages for her future son, while a child takes a photograph of her that will be important for Reese in the future. The story concludes with Sarah preparing for the difficult events to come.
