Audit confirms good environmental, social and operational performance of Punta Catalina

The Punta Catalina Electric Generation Company (EGEPC) received a positive evaluation in the seventh follow-up audit conducted by the LESC Expert Panel, which highlighted organizational stability, continuous improvement in environmental and social management, and the solid operational performance of the thermoelectric plant. During the visit, conducted in November 2025, the auditors confirmed that both units were operating at full capacity, with emissions within regulatory parameters and in accordance with IFC standards. The report underlines that the interruptions experienced in previous months were managed appropriately and do not compromise the continuity of the electrical service. In terms of the environment, the LESC highlighted that the plant maintains a rigorous monitoring program and that the results of air, water, noise, and biodiversity quality continue within the established limits. Although there were excursions of particulate matter (PST) in Unit 1 between August and October, the panel noted that corrective actions —including filter replacement— were implemented, with no evidence of significant impacts on neighboring communities. The audit also highlights that marine and terrestrial biodiversity remains healthy.

In the social sphere, the report acknowledges the stability of the community team, the constant improvement in transparency and information disclosure, and the good perception of the communities regarding social investment programs. The panel valued that EGEPC has a functional complaints mechanism and that it makes continuous visits to the interest groups to reinforce communication. Community projects in Nizao, Batey San José and Palenque were highlighted, as well as the implementation of health and safety measures to prevent risks associated with ash management.

Regarding occupational health and safety, the audit shows a sustained reduction in incidents, highlighting that the plant has solid protocols, frequent drills, and effective emergency response capabilities. The internal medical unit maintains a monitoring system in accordance with good international practices. LESC encouraged Punta Catalina to continue strengthening areas such as sargassum management, coastal process analysis, and timely updating of community health reports. It also recommended maintaining the proactive communication strategy with non-governmental organizations, especially on environmental issues. EGEPC affirmed that it will continue executing its continuous improvement plan, which includes future certification in international standards ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, the development of energy innovation projects, and the consolidation of governance and transparency standards.
