The confrontation, which occurred on the morning of Tuesday, February 17, 2026, in the village of San Marcos, municipality of La Masica, in the department of Atlántida, once again exposes the magnitude of the challenge faced by security forces in the face of the firepower of heavily armed criminal organizations and the persistent threat to the communities of the Atlantic coast.

According to the official report, upon entering the rural sector with difficult access, law enforcement forces were met with gunfire from high-caliber weapons, which intensified the confrontation and hindered the arrival of reinforcements and medical support.Four agents were injured as a result of the ambush. The National Police transferred the injured under strict emergency protocols to healthcare centers, where they remain under medical observation. The authorities have kept the report on their state of health confidential.
During the operation, four alleged members of “Los Wilmer” died at the scene, including Wilmer Sánchez, identified by police records as the leader of the criminal structure and a fugitive from El Porvenir prison. The State Secretariat in the Department of Security considered the death of the alleged leader as a significant blow to the organization, linked to crimes such as homicide, extortion, and arms trafficking, according to investigation sources. In addition, a fifth person identified as a member of the group was injured in the shooting and was taken into custody to a care center. As soon as they are discharged, they will be brought before the competent courts. A sixth subject was captured in the area and is in formal detention. Specialists from the Police Investigation Directorate (DPI) and Intelligence units secured the area after the confrontation, proceeding to collect ballistic elements and firearms of prohibited use allegedly used by the aggressors.
