Havana.- The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel declared 18 hours of official mourning for next Tuesday due to the passing of Deputy Prime Minister Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, one of the historical figures of the island’s revolution, official media reported this Monday.
n” “nThe mourning will begin at 06:00 local time on June 23 and will end at 12 midnight (04:00 GMT) of the same day, as detailed in the official decree published on the Cubadebate website.
n” “nIt also establishes that during this period of official mourning, the Cuban flag will be flown at half-mast in public buildings and military institutions.
n” “nThe Cuban government reported last Sunday the death of Ramiro Valdés, in Havana at the age of 94, through a statement in which it highlighted his “brilliant and extraordinary record of service to the Homeland” and as “deserving of the respect and admiration of the people of Cuba for his dedication and proven loyalty to the revolutionary cause“.

He also highlighted that “every act of the Commander’s life was marked by his absolute loyalty to the leadership of Fidel and Raúl Castro, to his fellow fighters, and to the Moncada Program, whose righteous essence he defended, from the assault on the dictatorship’s fortress in 1953 until the last breath of his exemplary life this Father’s Day”.

n” “nRamiro Valdés was one of the last representatives of the so-called historic generation of the island’s revolution and of the narrow circle that, with Fidel Castro at the helm, took power in 1959 and implemented a Soviet-style socialist system in Cuba.
