Cuba.-The opposition platform Council for Democratic Transition in Cuba announced the launch of a national campaign with the aim of promoting a constitutional reform to eliminate the political monopoly exercised by the Communist Party of Cuba, the only legally recognized political organization in the country.
The initiative was presented this Monday and seeks to modify Article 5 of the 2019 Cuban Constitution, which establishes the Communist Party as the superior leading political force of society and the State. According to a statement released by the opposition organization, the permanence of the single-party system constitutes “the biggest national security problem that Cuba has”, considering that it limits citizen participation and restricts political plurality. Although the platform acknowledges that the chances of success are reduced due to the control maintained by the Communist Party over governmental and legislative structures, it maintains that the campaign seeks to demonstrate the loss of social representativeness of the ruling organization and open spaces for debate on the political future of the nation.
The proposal adds to the efforts of various sectors of the Cuban opposition that advocate for democratic reforms, greater political openness, and the recognition of party pluralism on the island.
