Damaged vehicles and 95 trees fallen on houses due to the extratropical cyclone in Uruguay

Montevideo.- The extratropical cyclone that affected Uruguay this Saturday left 13 damaged vehicles and 95 trees fallen on houses, while in different areas of the south of the country the electricity service was affected, according to the National Fire Department. The authority indicated that on the day it received 950 calls at its emergency management center and intervened in more than 100 incidents related to the aforementioned event. A statement indicated that 13 vehicles were damaged. One of them was a car that had a tree fall on it while it was driving, while another was a truck that had the same thing happen to it. Firefighters underlined that in none of these events were people injured.

On the other hand, 95 trees fell on different houses and another 120 affected the public road and the power cables in different parts of the country.

“The main interventions were recorded in the coastal area of the Río de la Plata, mainly in the departments (provinces) of Montevideo and Maldonado. Likewise, in the city of Florida, a significant number of interventions were recorded due to falling trees,” detailed Firefighters.

Finally, he requested that the population take extreme precautions, avoid circulating through affected areas, and not approach fallen cables. In the morning, more than 12,000 customers in the department of Maldonado -in the southeast of the country- were without electricity, according to reports from the state-owned company Administración Nacional de Usinas y Trasmisiones Eléctricas (UTE). The Intendancy of Maldonado also reported -in a primary balance- that the storm affected hundreds of people in the town of José Ignacio, and that it left “dozens of fallen trees” in different parts of Maldonado and Punta del Este, the main tourist destination of the department.
