Santiago.– The Director General of Migration, Vice Admiral Luis Rafael Lee Ballester, reported this Wednesday in this city that the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) has detained nearly 200,000 foreigners in an irregular migratory status so far this year, while revealing that more than 430 agents of the institution have been investigated for alleged irregularities, processes that have led to sanctions and dismissals.
The official explained that the arrests have been concentrated mainly in Greater Santo Domingo, the Eastern region, and the border provinces, areas where, as he indicated, the greatest presence of foreigners in an irregular migratory situation is recorded.
Lee Ballester stated that the DGM maintains a “zero tolerance” policy against corruption and malpractice within the institution, which is why the Internal Affairs, Investigations, and Counterintelligence directorates were strengthened, with the purpose of supervising staff performance and ensuring compliance with ethical and legal standards.
As part of institutional strengthening, it announced that the entity will incorporate new agents and expand its operational presence in the provinces through a recruitment process that will include psychological evaluations, trust tests, and specialized training programs.

The Migration director also announced that the institution is working on the creation of a migration processing center in the Northern region, with the goal of streamlining interdiction operations and improving migration management in the Cibao.
The statements were offered prior to the start of an inspection day in Santiago and Puerto Plata, where the head of the DGM supervised the migratory operations being carried out at the airport and other strategic points in the Northern region.
