Dominicans rate the arrest of Nicolás Maduro as positive; “They took a long time to remove him from power”

Santo Domingo. – Following the news of the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the Donald Trump administration, Dominican citizens expressed positive reactions, showing surprise, relief, and hope for the Venezuelan people.

In a tour conducted by De Último Minuto, those consulted stated that the arrest “lasted a long time, one doesn’t even remember anymore,” reflecting the perception that the action came after years of international complaints against the Venezuelan president for alleged human rights violations, the political and economic crisis that Venezuela is going through. Other citizens pointed out that the news brings them joy and solidarity with Venezuelans, considering that it could represent an opportunity for political changes that improve living conditions in that country.

“One is happy for them, because they have worked hard. Hopefully this will help Venezuela to rise up,” expressed a consultant. The reactions also demonstrate the interest of the Dominican population in the Venezuelan situation, especially due to the presence of a large community of Venezuelan migrants in the country, with whom many Dominicans maintain labor and social ties. So far, President Luis Abinader, nor the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Álvarez, have issued an official position on the arrest, while the event continues to generate debates for and against.
