DR and Trinidad and Tobago sign air agreement to boost tourism

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago signed an air services agreement this Tuesday to boost trade, tourism, and bilateral investment. Through this agreement, the parties mutually grant overflight and landing rights, authorize non-scheduled and multi-destination air transport, and agree on strict measures regarding operational safety and civil aviation, among other aspects, according to a statement from the Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The agreement was signed by the Chancellor of the Dominican Republic, Roberto Álvarez; and the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation of Trinidad and Tobago, Eli Zakour. During the event, Álvarez highlighted that Trinidad and Tobago “represents a strategic partner to continue deepening the regional integration of the Caribbean, by sharing common challenges and opportunities in areas such as trade, tourism, logistics, energy and sustainable development“. In that sense, he affirmed that the pact “will contribute to facilitating greater commercial and tourist exchanges, promoting new investment opportunities and strengthening the rapprochement between our business sectors and citizens.”

At the same time, it opens up new possibilities to increase flight frequency, expand connectivity options, and foster an environment of greater technical and institutional cooperation between the aeronautical authorities of both countries, Álvarez stated in the statement. For his part, Minister Zakour highlighted that the aviation sector “plays a fundamental role in economic development, trade, tourism, investment and cultural exchange“. By establishing an Open Skies framework, “our countries are creating new opportunities for airlines, businesses, and citizens alike,” he said, and emphasized that the agreement signed this Tuesday “will facilitate greater flexibility in air services, foster competition in air transport, and improve connectivity” between Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic.
