El Nacional ends its print edition on July 31 after nearly 60 years of history

Santo Domingo. The newspaper El Nacional will cease its printed edition starting this Friday, July 31, ending nearly six decades of history in Dominican journalism. From that date on, the media outlet will continue to operate exclusively on its digital platform.
With the closure of its print edition, the last printed evening newspaper in the Dominican Republic disappears, marking the end of an era that accompanied some of the country’s main political, social, and institutional events.
Founded on November 11, 1966 by journalist Rafael Molina Morillo, El Nacional was born a little over a year after the April Revolution of 1965 and established itself as one of the main benchmarks of the national written press.
During the tenure of the late journalist Radhamés Gómez Pepín, between 1988 and 2015, the newspaper strengthened its presence under the slogan “The voice of all”, becoming a reference medium for the coverage of national current events and public debate.
Although the company had not yet made the official announcement to the public, the decision was previously communicated to advertisers and subscribers. This Friday’s edition will be the last one to reach readers in print format.

Throughout its history, the newspaper was directed by renowned figures of Dominican journalism, among them Freddy Gatón Arce, Rafael Molina Morillo, Mario Álvarez Dugan, Radhamés Gómez Pepín and, since 2016, Bolívar Díaz Gómez.
The circulation of El Nacional in print reflects the transformation that the media industry is experiencing, driven by changes in information consumption habits and the growth of digital platforms.
With this decision, a significant chapter in the history of Dominican journalism concludes, as El Nacional begins a new stage focused on the digital ecosystem and the production of content for audiences online.
