The Karadeniz Powership İrem Sultan floating power plant, installed on Los Negros beach in the province of Azua, is the same one that had to be diverted to Cuba due to protests by community members who prevented its installation in 2022.
Due to the strong protests, where community members assaulted contractors who would install the transmission lines, that vessel was diverted to Cuba, where it has been since then.
The recent installation comes a few days after the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, signed Decree 517-25, through which he declared a national emergency in the electricity system.
“We have not been able to build the transmission line having all the permits, the population has not allowed us to finish the work on the line,” said the company representative, Carlos Matamoros, to the media in 2022.
He also said that this situation caused losses to the company, and that the authorities were looking for a solution to the crisis.
