Asunción.- The National Police of Paraguay found this Monday the electronic ankle bracelet that the former head of the Brazilian Highway Police, Silvinei Vasques, wore, who was convicted for Jair Bolsonaro’s coup plot, and who was arrested last Friday at the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, which serves Asunción, when he was trying to flee to El Salvador.
The artifact was discovered behind a washbasin in a bathroom at the bus terminal in the Paraguayan town of Ciudad del Este, near the Brazilian city of Foz de Iguaçu, by service personnel who were cleaning and reported it to the Police.
“We went to the place and were able to confirm that it was an electronic ankle bracelet,” said the director of the Barrio Obrero Police Station of Ciudad del Este, Fernando Valenzuela, to the local channel NPY.
Assuming it was an artifact of Brazilian origin due to its characteristics and serial number, the National Police contacted the Tripartite Command – which includes the migration authorities of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil – which finally confirmed that it was the one Vasques was carrying.
Vasques impersonated identity to flee
Paraguay summarily expelled Vasques last Friday, after detecting that the former Bolsonaro collaborator was trying to flee justice in his country using a genuine passport, but one that did not belong to him.
Valenzuela said in this regard that he presumes that Vasques crossed the Friendship Bridge, broke his electronic ankle bracelet and took a bus to Asunción, where he impersonated the identity of a Paraguayan to try to travel to El Salvador.
On December 16th, Vasques was sentenced by the Supreme Court in the trial against the last five defendants in the coup attempt orchestrated by Bolsonaro, who is already serving a 27-year prison sentence.
However, Vasques had not yet begun to serve the sentence in a closed regime because the sentence is not yet final, as the ruling can still be appealed.
The Supreme Court found Vasques guilty of being behind an operation in the second round of the 2022 elections to hinder voters from reaching polling stations in traditionally left-wing strongholds and thus favor Bolsonaro, who was ultimately defeated by the current ruler, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
