SANTO DOMINGO. The former captain of the national team, Eulis Báez, will begin a new stage in his basketball career by joining the coaching staff of the Dominican senior men’s national team that will compete in the Third Qualifying Window for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Following an outstanding career as a professional player in Europe, the National Basketball League (LNB), and the national team, Báez will join the coaching staff led by Argentine coach Néstor “Ché” García, serving as an assistant coach.

The designation was announced by García himself and has the backing of the president of the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal), Rafael Uribe, as well as the general manager of the national team, Junior Páez (Jipy).

Báez will join the coaching staff that will accompany the Dominican team in the matches against the United States and Nicaragua, corresponding to the third qualifying window. Both matches will be held in Santo Domingo on July 3rd and 6th, respectively, at 8:00 p.m., at the Professor Virgilio Travieso Soto “BanReservas” Arena.

The coaching staff will also be composed of David Díaz, Abraham Disla, and the Argentine Sergio Jiménez as assistants. Carlos De León will serve as Director of Operations, Adenhaweer Díaz (Rilling) will be the kinesiologist, Germán Andrín will be in charge of physical preparation, and Dr. Gewill Acosta will be the team physician.

Báez’s foray into coaching is not new. The former player managed the Leones de Santo Domingo in the LNB last season, an experience that strengthened his credentials as a coach.

The Dominican national team’s training sessions will begin next Tuesday, June 23rd, at 7:00 PM at the Professor Virgilio Travieso Soto Arena, where 36 players have been summoned to begin preparations.

The Dominican Republic arrives at this window with a 3-1 record, tied at the top of Group A with the United States. Mexico occupies third place with a 2-2 mark, while Nicaragua has yet to secure any victories (0-4). The Dominicans and Americans have already secured their advancement to the next qualifying round.
