Brussels. – The European Parliament requested an investigation into the circumstances surrounding FIFA’s decision to rescind the red card shown to U.S. forward Folarin Balogun, following allegations of alleged intervention by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The initiative was presented this Tuesday by a group of MEPs, who asked to clarify whether there was any type of political influence in the decision adopted by the world football governing body.
The legislators also requested an examination of the role played by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, to establish whether the decision was influenced by pressure from the U.S. administration.

The controversy arose after the annulment of the sanction imposed on Balogun, which allowed him to play in the World Cup round of 16 match against Belgium. However, the United States national team fell with a score of 4-1 and was eliminated from the tournament.
MEPs believe that the case must be analyzed with transparency to preserve the independence of sporting decisions and the credibility of international competitions.
