Santo Domingo. Activist Ezequiel Monegro reported this Wednesday an alleged irregular arrest attempt against a witness linked to a judicial process being heard at the Ciudad Nueva Palace of Justice, asserting that agents acted without presenting a judicial warrant.

Monegro explained that the incident occurred when a police officer attempted to detain the witness while he was in court, a situation that, he claimed, was prevented by the people accompanying the witness.

“The witness did not have any arrest warrant. If an investigating officer has a warrant, the correct thing to do is to present it and proceed according to the law,” he stated.

Likewise, he questioned the actions of a representative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, asserting that he collaborated with the attempted arrest even though, according to his version, there was no judicial warrant against the witness.

The activist also expressed concern about the development of the judicial process and requested that the physical integrity of both the journalist covering the case and their family members be guaranteed.

During his statements, Monegro criticized the handling of a hearing conducted via Gesell chamber, alleging that the interrogation of a minor was carried out without the presence of the defense, which, in his view, affected due process guarantees.

Furthermore, he maintained that the judge presiding over the case has shown a favorable attitude toward the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the plaintiff, considering that there is unequal treatment toward the defense during the hearings.

“Justice in this country must prevail and judges must maintain neutrality in every judicial process,” he stated.

Finally, Monegro indicated that he will continue to follow up on the case and reiterated his call for the fundamental rights of all persons involved in the process to be respected.

So far, the authorities have not offered an official version regarding the complaints made by Monegro.
