Mexico City.- The former mayor of the Fresnillo municipality, in the Mexican state of Zacatecas, and former congressman Benjamín Medrano Quezada, who was the first openly gay mayor in Mexico, was killed in an armed attack in the city of Guadalajara, state of Jalisco (west).
The crime took place last Tuesday inside a commercial establishment, but the body was identified two days later by the authorities as it was not carrying any identification.
Security sources indicated that the attackers were allegedly two subjects traveling on a motorcycle, who shot him from a few meters away.
In a statement, the municipality of Fresnillo lamented the passing of Medrano Quezada.
“We express our deepest condolences to their family and friends, respectfully accompanying them in this moment of grief and wishing them strength in the face of this irreparable loss. Rest in peace,” the municipality’s message stated.

Meanwhile, the deputy of the conservative National Action Party (PAN), Noemí Luna, also expressed her condolences for the death of her former fellow deputy and former mayor of Fresnillo.

Medrano Quezada held the position of municipal president of Fresnillo from 2013 to 2015, a municipality of 240,000 inhabitants and a key point for drug trafficking in north-central Mexico.
Furthermore, between 2020 and 2023, the municipality was the city with the highest perception of insecurity, according to the National Survey of Urban Public Security (ENSU) published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
The former mayor, who was also known for his facet as a singer and businessman, was the owner of a gay bar in Fresnillo. EFE
