Tegucigalpa.- The President of Honduras,
Xiomara Castro, voted this Sunday in the general elections of her country and pointed out that by exercising the vote, Hondurans demonstrate “
sovereignty“.
Accompanied by her husband, Manuel Zelaya, the main advisor and general coordinator of the ruling Liberty and Refoundation Party (Libre, left), Castro cast her vote in the El Espino neighborhood, in the municipality of Catacamas, department of Olancho, east of the country, where the presidential family has lived.
Castro, who will conclude his four-year term on January 27, 2026, expressed that the elections are a civic celebration for his country, and that they are held at a time he described as “crucial” for democracy.
He also highlighted that his government has invested in infrastructure projects, in the agricultural sector, and in the defense of the environment, among other projects.
Castro is the first Honduran woman to have come to power in her country, in more than a century of political history.
The president supports the candidate of Libre, Rixi Moncada, who in the present administration was Secretary of Finance and Defense.
The candidates with the most votes are Moncada; Nasry Asfura, of the National Party, the main opposition force and whom the President of the United States, Donald Trump, publicly asked to support, and Salvador Nasralla, of the Liberal Party, also in opposition.
Hondurans will also vote to elect Castro’s successor, 298 mayoralties, 128 deputies to the local Parliament and 20 to the Central American Parliament.
