Mexico shows willingness to “recover” the relationship with Peru following Fujimori’s statements

Mexico City.- The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, celebrated this Friday that the president-elect of Peru, Keiko Fujimori, has expressed her willingness to resume relations with the North American country, while stating that she will communicate with Lima to “see the particularities of how to recover that relationship”.

“Yes, we do intend to restore the relationship with Peru. We did not break that relationship, they broke it; they decided to, and it is good that they have those wishes,” the president declared in her daily press conference.

On Thursday, Keiko Fujimori stated that she has “every intention” on her part to resume relations with Mexico, which have been suspended since 2025.

In this regard, the Mexican president expressed her willingness to restore the relationship following the statements made by the president-elect of Peru, with whom she had not had any communication to date.

However, Sheinbaum reported that she requested the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Velasco, to establish communication with the “new team that will govern” Peru with the objective of “seeing the particularities of how to recover that relationship”.

Why do Mexico and Peru not have diplomatic relations?

This announcement represents a shift in the Mexican president’s stance, who days earlier had left the normalization of relations with the Andean country.

Regarding the diplomatic crisis with Lima, the Mexican head of state recalled that it was the Peruvian government that broke off relations due to the stance taken on the imprisonment of former President Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), who was removed from office and detained after unsuccessfully attempting a coup d’état by trying to unconstitutionally dissolve the Peruvian Congress in December 2022.

“We consider it an arbitrary detention because it did not even comply with the rules and laws themselves for the removal of a president. According to the number of votes that were required in congress, it is as simple as that,” he stressed.

Despite its willingness to resume relations, it highlighted that Mexico’s position “will continue to be that, it will not change,” while also asking to wait for Fujimori’s opinion on this matter.

In this sense, Sheinbaum mentioned that a UN group requested Castillo’s release after concluding that his detention was “arbitrary,” a position also held by her Executive branch.

Peru severed diplomatic relations with Mexico at all levels in November 2025, following the Mexican government’s decision to grant political asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who is being prosecuted for her involvement in the attempted coup d’état attributed to Castillo.

Since then, both countries have kept their diplomatic ties suspended, although they continue to share regional integration spaces such as the Pacific Alliance.
