Pedro Vergés is selected National Literature Prize 2026

Santo Domingo.– The Corripio Foundation, Inc. and the Ministry of Culture awarded the 2026 National Literature Prize to the writer Pedro Vergés, in recognition of his outstanding intellectual career and his valuable contributions to Dominican literature and culture. The award, which includes a diploma and an economic endowment of two million pesos, was announced this Friday within the framework of the commemoration of the birth of Juan Pablo Duarte. The official presentation of the award will take place on Tuesday, February 17, at 7:00 p.m., at the National Theater, with open admission to the public. The announcement was made by the honorary table, composed of the founding member of the Corripio Foundation, José Alcántara Almanzar; the vice president of the institution, Ana Corripio de Barceló; the Vice Minister of Cultural Identity and Citizenship, Pastor de Moya; and Juan Daniel Balcácer, advisor to the Corripio Foundation. During the press conference, Ana Corripio highlighted the literary quality of the award-winning author. “For his exemplary prose, through an impeccable command of our language, his valuable contribution to contemporary literature, with fundamental works such as The Novel, and the depth of his work as a researcher and essayist“, she expressed. The selection process was carried out by a jury composed of representatives from the main universities in the country and the Dominican Academy of Language, who deliberated under criteria of equity, granting a vote to each member.

Pedro Luciano Vergés Ciman is a writer, essayist, poet, diplomat, and doctor in Romantic Philology from the University of Zaragoza, Spain. He has been a university professor, Minister of Culture, and ambassador of the Dominican Republic in Spain. His literary work has been recognized internationally, with his novel Sólo cenizas hallarás, winner of the Narrative Critics Award and the Blasco Ibáñez Novel Award, standing out. Created in 1990, the National Literature Award aims to recognize the excellence of Dominican writers and promote the cultural development of the country, establishing itself as one of the highest literary awards at the national level.
