Miami.- The Peruvian national team achieved its first victory this Friday under the command of Brazilian coach Mano Menezes by narrowly defeating Haiti 1-2, which despite the loss showed it is ready to cause surprises in the World Cup, where it is placed in Group C alongside Brazil, Morocco, and Scotland.
The Peruvians saved the day with two goals in the final minutes from defender Renzo Garcés and forward Jairo Concha, which allowed them to come back from Wilson Isidore’s initial goal for the Haitian team, who had control of the game for most of the match and could have scored more had they been more accurate in the final third.
The modest semi-professional team managed by the Frenchman Sébastien Migné proved that it is capable of beating one of the South American national teams, which confirmed that its historic qualification for the World Cup is no coincidence, even though Peru is a team in the midst of rebuilding and in a testing phase for generational renewal.
The Peruvians barely had clear goal-scoring opportunities until the final stretch of the match, where two rebounds following corner kicks allowed the Bicolor to first equalize and then come from behind thanks to shots from inside the box by Garcés (m.81) and Concha (m.84).

Until then, Peru had barely stepped into the rival’s area, while the Haitians had counterattacks to have extended the lead before scoring the goals that gave them the victory.

The Haitians showed that they are a team with a lot of confidence, whose legs do not shake when it comes to attacking, even if that leaves them disorganized in defense. Peru wanted to respond in the same way and it almost went very wrong for them.
A dribble by Carrillo with his back to the goal led to a turnover that ended in Haiti’s goal, with a run by Loucius to the edge of the box, where he threaded a pass for Isidor to beat Gallese with a first-time shot.
In the second half, the substitutions arrived, and that allowed Peru to balance the game a bit more without much clarity, while Gallese prevented Haiti from sealing the match before luck smiled on the South American team with the two goals scored in plays full of rebounds inside the penalty area.
