Senator Pedro Tineo assists girl with genetic disease in El Placer, Yamasá

Monte Plata.– After the communicator Juan Carlos de la Cruz announced the case of the girl Yanis Muñoz, who suffers from Xeroderma pigmentosum and resides in the El Placer community, Senator Pedro Tineo came to her aid, immediately managing her medical attention in health centers.

The minor, 9 years old, was taken by the legislator himself along with the communicator and Dr. Edis Canela to the municipal hospital of Yamasá, where she received initial care. From there she was referred to the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital for a specialized evaluation. As part of the efforts made by the senator with the public health system, the transfer to Santo Domingo was coordinated with the Directorate of Out-of-Hospital Emergency Care Services (DAEH). The legislator’s action occurred a few hours after the case was made public, which facilitated the girl’s access to higher-level health services in the capital, generating hope among her relatives.

Xeroderma pigmentosum is a rare genetic disease that prevents the skin from repairing damage caused by ultraviolet radiation. Those who suffer from it have extreme sensitivity to the sun, with burns and lesions in a few minutes, as well as a high risk of developing skin cancer from an early age. Its management requires avoiding sun exposure and maintaining strict protection care. Due to the need to avoid daylight, those who suffer from this condition are popularly known as “moon children”.
