The Kremlin expressed its condolences today to the families of the nine newborns who died at the beginning of the year in a maternity hospital in the Siberian region of Kemerovo and called for measures to be taken to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.
“Now it is very important to take the corresponding measures to prevent similar situations from repeating in the future and naturally establish the causes of this tragedy,” declared the spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dmitry Peskov, in his daily telephone press conference.
The Kremlin representative expressed his “deepest condolences to the parents who lost their children.” “This is truly a great misfortune,” he maintained.

The regional department of the Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) of the Russian region of Kemerovo, in Siberia, initiated a criminal case this Tuesday for the death of nine newborns in a maternity hospital in the city of Novokuznetsk, and subsequently arrested two doctors from the health institution.
According to the digital media outlet Fontanka.ru, during the first two weeks of the year, nine newborns died in the aforementioned medical center in Novokuznetsk, three of them on the same day, for reasons unknown until now, a fact described as scandalous by the Russian media and social networks.
The maternity hospital stopped receiving new patients, alleging a quarantine due to acute respiratory infections.
The CIR regional department, along with the Russian consumer protection and health regulators, Rospotrebnadzor and Roszdravnadzor, initiated an inspection of the hospital to establish how it complied with sanitary and epidemiological standards.
In the city of Novokuznetsk, with a population of just over half a million people, two maternity hospitals operate.
