The leftist José María Balcázar is the new interim president of Peru

Lima.- The Congress of Peru elected octogenarian left-wing parliamentarian José María Balcázar as the new president of the Andean country this Wednesday, replacing the right-winger José Jerí, whom the Peruvian Legislature dismissed the day before, after barely four months in office and less than two months before the general elections. Balcázar, 83 years old, was the most voted by the Peruvian chamber to fill the vacancy left by Jerí as president of Congress, which automatically makes him interim president of Peru in the absence of authorities elected by popular vote, after the dismissals of Pedro Castillo (2021-2022) and Dina Boluarte (2022-2025).
