Thirty years in prison for man who killed ex-partner in Espaillat

Santo Domingo.- At the request of the Public Ministry, the judges of a collegiate court of the Espaillat judicial district sentenced a man found guilty of murdering his ex-partner with a bladed weapon in 2023 to the maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. Johan Manuel Almánzar stabbed his ex-partner Yaneris Argentina Rojas to death on February 20, 2023. The victim was in front of her home in the aforementioned municipality, according to the accusatory file prepared by the Public Ministry based on the investigation by prosecutor Michael Taveras. Litigation lawyers Delio David Balcácer Conde and Lesly Díaz, from the National Legal Representation Service for Victims’ Rights (Relevic) in Moca, asked the court that the defendant be sentenced to pay an indemnity of 10 million pesos in favor of the relatives of Argentina Rojas. In response to Relevic’s request, the court, composed of judges Luis Rafael Diloné (president), Rosa Molina, and Bienmey Suárez, sentenced the defendant, in the civil aspect, to the payment of RD$4.0 million to the victim’s family.

During the process, litigating prosecutors Diego Torres, Luisa Rodríguez, and Yesiely Fabré provided sufficient evidence to support the request for the imposition of the maximum penalty before the Criminal Chamber of the Espaillat Collegiate Tribunal. Almánzar was found guilty of violating articles 295, 296, 297, 298 and 302 of the Penal Code, which typify and punish the criminal offense of murder. The processed person must serve the sentence in the Correction and Rehabilitation Center (CCR) La Isleta, in the municipality of Moca, Espaillat province.
