New York.– Thousands of flights have been canceled or delayed in the U.S., in the middle of the Christmas season, due to the winter storms that are hitting several regions of the country this weekend.
This Saturday, more than 7,000 flights were canceled in the country and another 1,300 canceled, according to data from the FlightAware portal. The airports that suffered the greatest impact were those serving the metropolitan area of New York City (John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark) and Boston International Airport, in the northeast of the country.
In New York, 10 centimeters of snow fell, within the predicted range of 10 to 20 between Friday and Saturday. However, areas of Long Island received between 17.7 centimeters and 19 centimeters.
Winter storms in the US
After the first major storm of this season, which caused traffic jams on the roads of the northeast and disrupted flights on the dates when the most travelers pass through the country’s airports, a second winter system threatens the Midwest region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The storm is forecast to intensify on Sunday, before moving through the Great Lakes region on Monday. “This system is expected to be accompanied by numerous winter hazards starting tomorrow night, including blizzard conditions and snow accumulations of more than 30 centimeters in areas of the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes,” detailed the NWS.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the government agency that oversees air traffic security, predicted last Monday that this holiday season will break records in passenger numbers, with more than 44 million people.
The agency indicated that it expects the highest volume of passengers to be recorded on Sunday, December 28, with about 2.86 million travelers.
