Miami.- The President of the United States, Donald Trump, assured this Saturday that Cuba is in its “last moments of life”, but affirmed that he is negotiating with Havana and that it will have “a great new life”.
“Cuba is in its last moments of life as it is now. It will have a great new life, but it is in its last moments of life as it is,” expressed the president during the ‘Shield of the Americas’ summit in Miami with presidents of the Latin American right.
Trump assured that he “eagerly awaits the great change that will soon come to Cuba”, but also pointed out that his “focus right now” is on the war in Iran.
He also said that he and his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, are “negotiating” with the Government of Havana.
“I would think that an agreement with Cuba would be made very easily, but for 50 years I have been hearing about Cuba; since I was a little boy I was hearing about Cuba,” he declared.
Following the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro by US forces in Venezuela, Cuba stopped receiving Venezuelan oil and Trump announced tariffs for anyone supplying it with crude, an energy blockade that worsened the island’s social and economic crisis.
The attendees of Trump’s summit in Miami are the presidents of Argentina, Javier Milei; Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz; Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves; Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader; Ecuador, Daniel Noboa; El Salvador, Nayib Bukele; Guyana, Irfaan Ali; Honduras, Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura; Panama, José Raúl Mulino; Paraguay, Santiago Peña, and the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Also attending is the president-elect of Chile, José Antonio Kast, who will take office next Wednesday.
