Washington.– The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Wednesday the designation of the anti-fascist movement Antifa as a “large terrorist organization”, which he described as “a dangerous and sick radical left disaster”.
The leader used his Truth Social network to announce the measure and indicated that he will recommend the opening of investigations into those who finance said movement, under what he described as “the highest legal standards”.
The announcement occurs amidst a climate of strong political polarization, days after the assassination of the ultra-conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which occurred on September 10th. The event has reignited the debate on extremism and political violence in the United States, while the White House seeks to tighten surveillance on groups classified as radical.
With this decision, Trump consolidates his position against Antifa, which he has repeatedly pointed to as responsible for disturbances and violent acts in the country. However, the measure has also generated criticism from sectors that consider that it could have implications for freedom of expression and social protest.
