Two French people die and five are injured in an accident in El Catey

Sánchez, Samaná. -A tragic traffic accident recorded this Saturday night in the community of El Catey, Sánchez municipality, left a toll of two deceased French citizens and at least five people injured.

The fatalities were identified as Jean Phillippe Champeaux and Severine Yvette Claudette Leuk, who were traveling in a tourist minibus heading to the province of Samaná after having entered the country through Las Américas International Airport.

According to preliminary reports, the accident occurred when a pickup truck allegedly performed an overtaking maneuver recklessly, causing a head-on collision with the vehicle in which the tourists were traveling.

According to medical reports, Champeaux died as a result of severe closed head trauma and closed abdominal trauma, while Leuk lost his life after suffering severe head trauma with a fracture at the base of the skull.

Among the injured is Jorge Thomas Dishmey Amparo, the driver of the tourist bus. Victoriana Altagracia and her 14-year-old daughter, who were traveling on a motorcycle at the time of the accident, were also injured. Likewise, two Haitian citizens suffered injuries, although their identities could not be established because they were not carrying identification documents.

Emergency units, health personnel, and competent authorities arrived at the scene and carried out assistance and transport operations for those affected.

The bodies of the tourists were taken to the morgue of the Doctor Alberto Gautreaux Municipal Hospital, in Sánchez. Meanwhile, the other people involved continue to receive medical attention at that health center.

The authorities are keeping investigations open to determine with precision the circumstances that gave rise to this unfortunate event.
