Venezuela calls “imperial madness” that DR authorizes the US to use airports

Caracas.– Venezuela’s Interior Minister, Diosdado Cabello, called the Dominican government’s decision to authorize the United States to provisionally use two airports in Santo Domingo as part of the anti-drug operation Lanza del Sur a “imperial madness”.

The measure, approved by President Luis Abinader, allows U.S. aircraft to use the Las Américas International Airport José Francisco Peña Gómez and the Joaquín Balaguer International Airport for aerial interdiction operations against drug trafficking in the Caribbean.

During his weekly program “Con el mazo dando”, Cabello ironized about the authorization and stated that the US presence in the region is not new:

“It makes me laugh that today I see that the president of the Dominican Republic authorizes US flights… You weren’t even born and that airport belongs to the gringos. But they recycle”.

The Chavista leader also maintained that this type of decision is part of what he called imperial strategies that seek to justify military actions and surveillance operations in the area.
