Santo Domingo.- The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, assured that efforts are being made to transform the town of Sosúa, in Puerto Plata, and eradicate practices such as pimping and sexual exploitation. He explained that both the Public Ministry and the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) have deployed continuous operations in the area.
When referring to the current situation of the municipality, the leader pointed out that it is not a recent problem.
“Desde 1997, Sosúa se convirtió en una zona turística, pero con una alta incidencia de prostitución”,
Abinader added that as of the year 2009, the sector known as El Batey was identified as a “red spot” that represented an obstacle to family tourism in the region.
“Those negative points need to be cleaned up for the nation,” he emphasized.
He also reported that two major interventions have already been carried out in the area and that the support of the economic, tourism, and social sectors is required to achieve a comprehensive transformation.
“Hemos hecho dos intervenciones y necesitamos que, en conjunto con los sectores económicos, turísticos y sociales, nos ayuden con este cambio”,
expresó.
The president highlighted that both international and national tourism, of a family nature, had stopped considering Sosúa as an ideal destination. “10 days ago we started an intervention throughout the town, starting with the center known as El Batey,” concluded the head of state.
